The pressure on student-athletes keeps mounting. For one UW-Madison runner, it was too much

USA TODAY NETWORK - Wisconsin Hundreds of runners pounded past the finish line last fall at the Nuttycombe Invitational. Seconds separated winners from losers on the University of Wisconsin-Madison course.

The athletes ran so fast it was almost easy to miss the green ribbons pinned to most of their jerseys. The UW-Madison women’s team had slipped the ribbons into each school’s welcome packet, along with a note.

“Dear student athletes,” the letter began. “In case you haven’t heard this in a while, you matter.”

Remembering Sarah Shulze through lasting foundation

Tragedy struck the Shulze family when their daughter Sarah, an accomplished cross-country runner at Oak Park High School, committed suicide in her junior year of college. They grieved, then they took action, starting a foundation in her memory to be a power for good.

Student-athletes aren't immune from suicide risk. Colleges are taking notice.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death on college campuses. And despite the overall rise in mental health concerns there, universities have been caught off guard when student-athletes have died by suicide.

UW track star Sarah Shulze's family returns to Madison one year after daughter's suicide

MADISON, Wis. - Sarah Shulze was a star student athlete, passionate about politics and making the world a better place. "Sarah was sweet, funny. She was always up for a good time," said her mom, Brigitte. "She loved being a Badger."But like many, she struggled in silence. In April 2022, Sarah died by suicide. She was 21 years old.
