A Power for Good in all that she did, Sarah Shulze was a political science major at University of Wisconsin-Madison, an intern for a Wisconsin state senator, a competitor for the university’s cross-country and track and field teams, and a voracious traveler and reader. When she died suddenly by suicide near the completion of the 2022 track season, Sarah’s third and most successful collegiate season to date, the lives of her deeply devoted family, friends, and teammates were profoundly altered.

In an effort to honor Sarah’s legacy of hard work, innate compassion, and many accomplishments on and off the track, the Sarah Shulze Foundation was established in 2023. Adopted in California in 2026, Sarah Shulze’s Law mandates that every member of a team’s coaching staff, both paid and volunteer, is formally trained in a state-approved, mental health curriculum.

A non-profit 501c3 organization, the Sarah Shulze Foundation is working to ensure that sports teams at all levels, as well as community youth groups, promote mental health hand-in-hand with physical health.
